Prescribing for CHILDREN

The Joint Formulary includes only a limited number of indications specifically for paediatric use e.g. acid suppression.  As a general rule, for requests to prescribe for paediatrics in primary care, reference should be made to the Children’s BNF for detailed advice on indication and dosing.

It is recognised that much prescribing in paediatrics is unlicensed or off-label but provision for this is made, where there is a substantial body of evidence to support the use, in the Interface Prescribing Policy in section 12.2 (see policy document on the left)

The Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care System Area Prescribing Committee (APC) approve the updated Interface Prescribing Policy 2025/2028

Guide to Managing Requests from NHS Providers outside of Surrey Heartlands where there is a conflict between our Traffic Light Status and their formulary.

The aim of this tool is to support prescribing decisions where our local Traffic Light status is in conflict with the status from a requesting organisation who is not represented at the Surrey Heartlands APC e.g. tertiary centre.

Refer to this guide and associated template letters for support.
